| Roy Howat has given world premičres of works (some discovered by him, others written for him) by Bizet, Chabrier, Debussy, Robin Orr and Wendy Hiscocks. He regularly sheds new light on other repertoire (including performances in Hong Kong of Mozart Piano Concertos); an antipodean tour of Bartók's Sonata for 2 pianos & percussion with Erzsébet Tusa, the former duo partner of Ditta Bartók, earned standing ovations. His performances of Schubert's late sonatas include live broadcasts in the USA, Switzerland and Australia (including one given at 24 hours' notice, the day before he recorded a CD of Debussy). Besides Vlado Perlemuter, Roy Howat's teachers have included Wight Henderson, Michael Gough Matthews, Nina Walker, Brigitte Wild, Igor Hmelnitsky, and Jacques Février, a close associate of Ravel and Poulenc. As a student in Paris Roy Howat played most of Debussy's piano music to Debussy's stepdaughter Dolly de Tinan, benefitting from her vivid and precise memories of how her stepfather had played his music. |
